Research excellence

Being placed 8th in the UK for research power by the latest Research Excellence Framework, Nottingham is a major research institution which delivers work of international significance.

The latest Research Excellence Framework rated over 97% of our research as being recognised internationally, and since 2003 our research and teaching academics have twice won Nobel Prizes. The University has also won a number of royal honours: the Queen's Award for Enterprise in 2006 (International Trade) and 2007 (Innovation – School of Pharmacy), and the Queen's Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education in 2012 for our work on global food security.

Student experience

The University continues to be ranked as a leading university for student experience according to the Times Higher Education Student Experience Survey, 2015. In accordance with the table's criteria, successful universities have high quality staff and lectures, well-structured courses, good accommodation and good community atmosphere.

In the latest National Student Survey (2014), Nottingham achieved an overall student satisfaction score of 88%, 2% above the sector average.

Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences

The faculty is comprised of four schools:

The faculty hosts a dynamic and productive community of staff and around 1,600 postgraduate students from all over the world, and has a research portfolio of £170m.

School of Life Sciences

Teaching in the School of Life Sciences is very much research-led, ensuring that our courses are at the cutting-edge and students are prepared for a number of careers. All life sciences students in their final year join a research group and conduct an original research project. Some students also have the opportunity to study an undergraduate masters degree over four years. We also offer high-quality taught masters programmes, covering a range of specialist courses ‘from molecules to man’ and there is a vibrant postgraduate research community.

The School of Medicine

The School of Medicine trains tomorrow’s doctors on a popular undergraduate medical course with a unique intercalated BMedSci, alongside a specialised graduate-entry course built around clinical problem solving and a BSc in Medical Physiology and Therapeutics. Our vibrant postgraduate taught and research training programmes are underpinned by our world-leading research.

The School of Veterinary Medicine and Science

The School of Veterinary Medicine and Science aims to equip our undergraduate students with the diagnostic, medical, surgical and other skills required to succeed in a changing world. The curriculum combines a clinically-focused basic science programme and relevant clinical learning opportunities with integrated research. We believe that the development of our innovative curriculum meets the industry need for veterinary graduates with practical and problem-solving abilities, an understanding of the need for lifelong learning and confidence and competence in their skills at gr

School of Health Sciences

We deliver undergraduate and postgraduate education in Nursing, Midwifery, Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Sciences. Our staff are experts drawn from these professional groups and related disciplinary areas, such as pharmacology and psychology.

Our mission is to provide excellent healthcare education and undertake outstanding research that inspires our students and staff to transform the health and wellbeing of individuals and communities and make an enlightened and valued contribution to society.

We work with healthcare providers, higher education institutions and government ministries across the world in a wide range of educational, research and faculty development partnerships. These collaborations enable students to make an enlightened, valued contribution to society.

Key achievements

  • In the latest national Research Excellence Framework our nursing and midwifery research was ranked 8th for impact 
  • 86% of the school’s research activity is rated as ‘world leading’ and ‘internationally excellent’ with significant impact on people's health and wellbeing (REF 2014)
